U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R), joined by Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), has introduced the No Sharia Act, which aims to prohibit the use or enforcement of Sharia Law and other foreign laws that conflict with the U.S. Constitution.
"Sharia Law is an affront to our Constitution and values Texans hold close," Cornyn said in a statement. "The No Sharia Act would install commonsense guardrails to ensure Sharia Law is kept out of our justice system and that freedom of religion is preserved. Sharia Law has no place in Texas or America, and this bill would make sure of that."
Tuberville echoed Cornyn's message, calling the measure necessary to uphold American principles and protect national values.
"Sharia Law is fundamentally anti-American and has no place in our country," he said. "We must protect American values, not apologize for them. I hope my colleagues can come alongside me in this effort to preserve our constitutional and God-given rights."
The legislation would prevent U.S. courts from enforcing judgments, decrees, or contracts that rely on foreign laws violating the Constitution. It would also invalidate contract provisions and block the application of foreign marriage, divorce, custody, adoption, or inheritance laws if they contradict U.S. law.
The proposal builds on Cornyn's ongoing efforts to prevent the application of Sharia Law in Texas.
