Governor Greg Abbott (R) has announced a new state-led operation to clear homeless encampments and improve public safety in Austin.
The initiative is being coordinated by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), the Texas State Guard, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ).
According to Abbott, the goal is to reduce crime and health hazards linked to illegal encampments on public and state property.
"Texans should not endure public safety risks from homeless encampments and individuals," Abbott said in a statement. "Weapons, needles, and other debris should not litter the streets of our community, and the State of Texas is taking action. I directed state agencies to address this risk and make Austin safer and cleaner for residents and visitors to live, travel, and conduct business."
As part of the operation, authorities have removed 48 encampments and cleared more than 3,000 pounds of debris from various areas across Austin. Law enforcement has also arrested 24 repeat felony offenders and seized over 125 grams of narcotics.
Additionally, ten individuals were found to have outstanding warrants, including one wanted out of state for aggravated escape from custody. Several of those arrested were armed and dangerous, or had violent criminal histories.
"The State of Texas will not stand idly by while public spaces are overrun by illegal activity," said Abbott. "We are committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring that our cities are safe, clean, and livable for everyone."
The Governor's office noted that cleanup and enforcement efforts will continue to restore public areas and uphold the rule of law.
