Enlisting the support of Senator Todd Young (R-IN) and Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has introduced the Taiwan Symbols of Sovereignty (Taiwan SOS) Act.
The legislation would authorize Taiwanese diplomats and servicemembers to display their national flag and wear official uniforms while in the United States on official business.
Cruz emphasized that the bill directly challenges efforts by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to diminish Taiwan's global standing.
"The Chinese Communist Party is committed to eroding Taiwan's global status, and the United States should be just as committed to strengthening it," said Cruz.
He criticized the reinstatement of prohibitions on the Taiwanese symbol by the Biden administration, calling for bipartisan support to rescind them permanently.
Sen. Young echoed the sentiment.
"Taiwan's government, military, and people deserve to be treated with the same respect and recognition we afford other countries," said Young.
He added that the Taiwan SOS Act reinforces the U.S. commitment to Taiwan while countering CCP coercion.
Sen. Blackburn stated, "Taiwan is a sovereign nation, and the U.S. should not support Communist China's efforts to undermine its independence."
Similar to Young, she noted that the legislation makes it clear that the United States stands firmly with Taiwan.
The measure would reverse Obama-era guidelines, reinstated under former President Biden, that prohibit Taiwanese representatives from displaying their symbols of sovereignty during official events.
