Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. announced its acquisition and planned development of the SOSA Energy Center, a 150 Megawatt (MW), or 300 megawatt-hour (MWh) battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Madison County, Texas.

Originally developed by Savion, a subsidiary of Shell plc, the project marks Energy Vault's first domestic acquisition through its Asset Vault investment platform and a significant milestone in expanding its U.S. portfolio.

Situated in the ERCOT North Market, which is one of the nation's most active power markets, the SOSA project is expected to receive a Notice to Proceed in the 4th quarter of 2025, with commercial operations beginning in the 1st Quarter of 2027.

Upon completion, the facility will provide critical grid support and renewable energy integration to Texas's rapidly growing energy sector.

The acquisition will be financed through Energy Vault's $300 million preferred equity investment from Orion Infrastructure Capital (OIC) and Federal Investment Tax Credit-related funds.

"SOSA represents the caliber of bankable, cash-flow generating assets that Asset Vault was designed to capture," said Cris Leary, Head of Infra Equity at OIC.

"The SOSA BESS is a strong addition to Energy Vault's growing global portfolio of energy storage deployments... this project acquisition demonstrates our commitment to one of the most important attributes of success in this dynamic market, speed of execution," stated Robert Piconi, Chairman and CEO of Energy Vault.

The SOSA project will use Energy Vault's third-generation B-VAULT AC product, enhancing system availability and cost efficiency. With this addition, Energy Vault's global portfolio now exceeds 2 Gigawatts of deployed or contracted systems.
