The State Tejano Democrats, Texas’ largest Hispanic Democratic organization, has thrown its support behind state Rep. James Talarico (D) in the 2026 U.S. Senate race.
The organization held a straw poll over the weekend, showing that the group backs state Rep. Talarico in the crowded U.S. Senate race, which also sees former Rep. Colin Allred (D) vying for the seat. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) recently shared that she is also considering joining the race, citing the recent effort from Republicans to redraw Texas' congressional map as the inciting factor for her to run for the senate.
The unofficial vote, which was conducted during the organization’s statewide meeting, asked members to select their preferred candidates for both national and statewide offices.
State Rep. Talarico’s strong showing in the straw poll shows growing momentum for his campaign among Latino Democrats from the Rio Grande Valley to Austin and across Texas.
Cinia Montoya, the president of the Coastal bend Tejano Democrats, commented on the results, expressing that “James Talarico has fought for la cultura y el Orgullo of Tejanos his entire career.” “We need to turn the page on 30 years of one-party rule that has left our social services gutted and our government mismanaged.”
“We need a Senator who will get Texas back on track for our families – someone who funds our schools, lowers health care costs, and stands for justice over fear,” she added. “James Talarico is that leader – he delivers.”
“I’m honored to have the support of so many Tejano Democrats in this straw poll,” state Rep. Talarico responded. “I will continue to stand with these community leaders as they fight for Tejanos across our state.”
Incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R) is facing a combative primary of his own as Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) and Rep. Wesley Hunt (R) are also vying to unseat him.
