U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R), joined by Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), has introduced the HUD Transparency Act, bipartisan legislation aimed at curbing waste, fraud, and abuse within the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
The bill would require HUD's Inspector General to testify annually before Congress to ensure accountability and transparency in the agency's management of taxpayer funds.
"By requiring HUD's Inspector General to testify before Congress each year, this commonsense bill would ensure the agency is spending taxpayer dollars responsibly," said Cornyn.
Sen. Cortez Masto added that "HUD exists to make housing more affordable for hardworking families across the country. This commonsense, bipartisan bill would ensure that Congress can exercise its oversight authority by monitoring the impact of HUD's work and preventing illegal or wasteful practices in the Department."
In the U.S. House of Representatives, Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz (R) is leading the companion legislation.
The Inspector General will also be required to report on actions taken to identify opportunities for improvement within HUD programs and make recommendations to enhance efficiency and public accountability.
