Ken Paxton Launches Investigation into Lorex Cameras for Potential Communist Ties

Attorney General Ken Paxton has opened an investigation into Lorex Technology Inc. amid concerns that the company may be selling surveillance cameras connected to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

"Texans should never have to worry that the devices protecting their homes could be tied to foreign adversaries," said Paxton. "Any company that gives CCP a foothold in American life will face the full force of Texas law."

Lorex, which was founded in 1991, was acquired by Dahua, a Chinese firm linked to the CCP, in 2012 before being sold to Taiwan-based Skywatch in 2022.

Despite the sale, reports suggest that Dahua continues to supply key components for Lorex Cameras. This is seen as a troubling connection since Dahua has been designated as a "Chinese military company" by the U.S. Department of War.

Both the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Federal Communications Commission have also imposed restrictions on Dahua's products, citing national security risks.

Lorex cameras remain available to Texas consumers through major retailers, including Amazon and Costco.

The Attorney General's Office is investigating whether Lorex deceptively markets products that pose privacy and security threats while promoting them as safe and suitable for residential use.
