Nathan Johnson Announces Run for Texas Attorney General

Texas State Senator Nathan Johnson (D) has officially filed to run for Texas Attorney General, positioning himself as the leading Democratic contender in a high-profile race already drawing significant attention from Republicans.

In an announcement, Sen. Johnson said the state must "make a fundamental change" after years of turmoil under Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has faced repeated legal scandals and internal controversies.

"We owe it to Texas to make a fundamental change, now," Johnson said. "Republican leadership has abused the power, neglected the operations, and left unfulfilled the obligations of the Attorney General's Office. They have maliciously and recklessly used it as a right-wing headline machine, taking their orders from D.C. powermongers and megadonor ideologues."

Johnson has presented his campaign as a return to professional, nonpartisan law enforcement, pledging to prosecute commercial scammers, ensure competitive markets, defend civil rights, and rebuild an office that has seen years of staff turnover under Paxton.

He emphasized the need for an attorney general who "must not cower before Donald Trump," and argued he is the only Democrat in the race with the experience to both win statewide and deliver reform once in office.

Johnson's entry comes as the Republican primary grows increasingly crowded. U.S. Rep. Chip Roy (R) recently announced his run for attorney general, joining a field of conservatives aiming to replace Paxton.

Roy, a longtime conservative, previously served as Paxton's top deputy before becoming one of his sharpest critics.

Both parties are preparing for an intense, nationally watched race that will shape the direction of Texas's top law enforcement office for years to come.
