Congressman Roger Williams (R-TX-25) sent a letter demanding that Attorney General Pam Bondi and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth launch an investigation into Democratic lawmakers over their call for military personnel to refuse certain orders.
According to a press release, the Texas lawmaker took issue with a video where Democratic lawmakers encouraged members of the US military to defy orders from the Commander in Chief, President Trump.
In the letter, Williams calls for “prompt attention” to the situation. He states that several Senators and Representatives allegedly attempted to “pressure (the) service members into defying the President for political reasons.”
Arizona Senator Mark Kelly is being investigated by the Pentagon after appearing in the video. He and the other officials stated in the video that US troops can “refuse illegal orders.”
The “illegal orders” mentioned in the video refer to the deployment of the National Guard to several states. Just this week, a federal judge ruled that the deployment of these forces violates federal law. However, many officials debate whether it does or not with many concerned over the deployments.
The video itself has sparked concern across the country.
In a recent social media post, President Trump accused the Democrats of “seditious behavior.”
According to the letter, Congressman Williams' concerns revolve around partisan beliefs in the military.
“History has shown that even the greatest of nations fall when their military acts on ideological division,” he wrote. “The United States Military is a nonpartisan institution that demands greatness from its warfighters—greatness that can only be achieved when soldiers put politics aside and serve together in defense of their nation.”
Congressmen Tony Weid (R-WI-08) and Paul Gosar (R-AZ-09) both signed off on the letter as well.
The letter urges the Department of Justice and the Department of War to investigate whether the officials’ claims were in violation of federal law.
