Rep. Al Green (D-TX) has filed a resolution to impeach President Donald Trump, accusing him of abuse of power and incitement of violence and death threats against lawmakers and federal judges.
The resolution claims that the president "is an abuser of presidential power who, if left in office, will continue to promote violence, engender invidious hate, undermine our democracy, and dissolve our Republic, and that he is impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors."
Rep. Green, who introduced articles of impeachment against President Trump earlier this year, has been a longtime critic. Most recently, he pushed back against the president's support to redraw Texas's congressional map, calling it a "race based" effort.
In the resolution, the Texas Democrat specifies two articles of impeachment against the president.
The first article references President Trump's feud with lawmakers the president dubbed the "Seditious Six." Rep. Green accuses President Trump of "calling for the execution of six Democratic lawmakers, all of whom are currently serving in the U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives, and who previously served in the U.S. Military or in U.S. Intelligence communities."
The second article "describes how President Trump has fostered a political climate in which lawmakers and judges face threats of political violence and physical assault, has made threats and vituperative comments against federal judges, putting their safety and well-being at risk, and is undermining the independence of our judiciary."
Along with the resolution, Rep. Green also submitted a letter of explanation, which provides for information regarding the resolution. In the letter, Rep. Green vows to "take a stand to protect government of the people, by the people, for the people."
Rep. Green spoke for a minute on the House floor this week, urging the House to allow a vote to impeach President Trump, who "should never hold any office of public trust ever again."
