Congressman Wesley Hunt (R-TX) says he supports President Donald Trump's current stance on kinetic military action against the drug cartels being supported by the Venezuelan government, emphasizing the president's focus on national security and avoiding lengthy wars.
In an interview with Texas Politics, Rep. Hunt, a former U.S. Army combat helicopter pilot, expressed his explicit trust in President Trump’s judgment in protecting American interests, stating that he supported doing “whatever the president wants to do to keep America safe.”
“Just no protracted, long wars,” said Hunt when asked about the military action that has taken place in Venezuela. “President Trump is the peace president.”
The ongoing military action is centered around drug trafficking that’s deeply intertwined with the Venezuelan government. After the re-election of current Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro, controversy over the country’s political landscape and future has remained a prevalent issue within national discourse.
In 2020, Maduro and other former and current officials were indicted by the U.S. Department of Justice. The indictment alleges ties to drug trafficking and other criminal activity.
Earlier this year, President Trump initiated a War on Drugs, focusing on drug activity within Venezuela. Over the course of the year, U.S. military presence has grown around the Venezuelan coast, targeting drug traffickers and namely the “Cartel of the Suns” who have alleged ties to the Venezuelan government and the Venezuelan president himself.
On the topic of immigration, Hunt backs the recent rise in Homeland Security investigations across the nation since the beginning of Trump’s term.
The Department of Homeland Security secretary Kristi Noem testified Thursday in Congress, backing Trump’s immigration agenda as well as speaking to the department’s actions.
“We’ve had 20 million people enter this country illegally. This is called the pendulum shifting back in our direction,” Rep. Hunt stated. “This is how it works.”
When asked about App Store Accountability Act (ASAA) that has been proposed in Congress, Rep. Hunt spoke from his perspective as a parent.
“I’m a parent to my kids and I’m certainly cautious of what they look at and consume…” he said. “If a parent wants to parent, we should be given the autonomy to do that.”
The ASA Act will place age restrictions on social media platforms to prevent minors from accessing content without their parents’ consent. The effort was led by Representative Jared Patterson (R-TX) and met with bipartisan support.
Rep. Hunt consistently backs the Trump Administration across key issues that remain relevant in national politics, stabilizing his position within the GOP. In his bid for Senate, his strong stances on key issues and alignment with the administration will determine whether or not he comes out on top.
