WASHINGTON-- U.S. Representative Troy Nehls (R) defended President Donald Trump's recent comments about "third-world countries" and how the president wants to ban immigration from those countries. In an exclusive interview with Texas Politics, Nehls argued that Trump is demanding greater accountability from foreign governments on defense spending and global security.
Nehls stated that Trump's critics are missing the broader point.
"I think he's holding all the countries across the globe accountable. Why is it always the United States that's got to pony up billions and billions of dollars to help protect Ukraine from Russia?" Nehls questioned. "What has the EU Done?"
According to Nehls, Trump's approach forces allies to shoulder a larger share of global commitments, particularly in military and economic matters. "I just think he's holding countries accountable. And it's about damn time," he affirmed.
Nehls praised Trump's trade and tariff policies, echoing the president's long-standing argument that the U.S. should take a harder line with foreign competitors. As well, Nehls believes Trump's foreign policy achievements merited the highest levels of global recognition. "I think Donald Trump deserves not one Nobel. He deserves the Nobel Peace Prize every day," Nehls suggested.
The Texas Republican has long been one of Trump's strongest supporters in the Texas delegation, and his remarks reflect a broader trend among Republican lawmakers who argue that Trump's tactics have pressured foreign governments in ways traditional diplomacy has not.
