A week after entering the race, U.S. Representative Marc Veasey (D-TX) announced that he is withdrawing his bid for Tarrant County judge.
Rep. Veasey, of Texas’s 33rd Congressional District, announced earlier this week that he had left the congressional race for the newly GOP-configured District. Instead, on Dec. 8, he entered the race for Tarrant County Judge, challenging incumbent Tim O’Hare (R) for the position.
Former U.S. Rep. Collin Allred (D) recently entered the race for the 33rd district on Dec. 8, the same day Rep. Veasey entered the race for Tarrant County judge, after withdrawing his bid for the Senate. Rep. Allred shared a statement about Veasey on social media this week.
“Marc Veasey has been a tireless champion for North Texas families and a respected leader who has always put service above self,” Allred said. “His decision reflects the same thoughtfulness and deep commitment to our community that have marked every step of his public service.”
Veasey ultimately left the race for Tarrant County judge to focus on the remainder of his term in Congress. The recent GOP-led redistricting that was passed in the Texas Legislature over the summer has greatly affected the 33rd district, leaving the incumbent with a drastically different district where his home found itself outside of the districts boundaries.
In a statement on social media, Allred stated that he grew up and lives in the newly-redrawn 33rd district line, using the sentiment to fuel his campaign.
“The 33rd district was racially gerrymandered by Trump in an effort to further rig our democracy but it’s also the community where I grew up attending public schools and watching my mom struggle to pay for our groceries,” stated Allred. “It’s the community where I was raised, and where Aly and I are now raising our two boys.”
Although Rep. Veasey is not seeking re-election, he is seeing through his final term until Jan. 2027. Alongside Democrat Allred, U.S. Rep Julie Johnson (D) is also running for the 33rd congressional district’s seat. The democratic primary election take place March 2026.
Despite these strategic shifts, only time can determine whether or not they will prove helpful or hopeless for the Democratic Party in Texas.
