Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani is set to be sworn in as mayor of New York City, with U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders administering the oath. Mamdani's victory has quickly become a rallying point for progressive Democrats nationwide, with party activists and candidates citing his campaign as a template for winning the contentious Democratic primaries.

Texas state Rep. James Talarico and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett have drawn attention for publicly praising Mamdani's approach and signaling alignment with similar political messaging.

National Republicans argue the developments reflect a broader shift among Democrats toward more openly progressive, and in their view, extreme positions.

"James Talarico and Jasmine Crockett are modeling their campaigns around Zohran Mamdani's socialist and extremist agenda in an effort to pull ahead in their messy primary," said National Republican Sentorial Committee Regional Press Secretary Samantha Cantrell. "Democrats are rallying behind Mamdani's radical, copy-cat candidates in messy primaries across the nation."

Talarico has described Mamdani's campaign as "one of the most exciting" in recent Democratic politics and referred to it as a "template for Democrats across the country."

His positions include support for wealth redistribution and opposition to state or local law enforcement assisting federal immigration enforcement. Talarico has also said he would "firmly oppose any attempts" to bar trans men from women's bathrooms.

Crockett has praised Mamdani's political rise and suggested Democrats should take a "MasterClass" from his campaign. She has drawn controversy for referring to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as "slave patrols" and for dismissing efforts to restrict trans men from women's sports as a "distraction."

As Democratic primaries approach, Republicans say Mamdani's ascent signals a growing influence of progressive ideology within the party, one they intend to highlight as voters weigh competing visions for leadership in Texas.
