Energy Vault Holdings, Inc. announced the commencement of construction on the SOSA Energy Center, a 150 megawatt/300 megawatt-hour battery energy storage system situated in Madison County, Texas.
The project marks a major milestone for the company's Asset Vault platform and is expected to reach commercial operation by the second quarter of 2027.
The SOSA Energy Center was originally developed by Savion, a subsidiary of Shell plc, and was formally acquired by Energy Vault in the fourth quarter of 2025. It is the first project to enter construction under Energy Vault's Asset Vault "Own & Operate" investment strategy, which is supported by a $300 million preferred equity investment from Orion Infrastructure Capital.
According to the company, the project is expected to generate more than $350 million in total revenue over its technical life, which is approximately $17 million to $20 million in recurring annual revenue.
The battery system will operate within the ERCOT North market and utilize Energy Vault's third-generation B-VAULT DC technology to provide grid reliability and support renewable energy integration.
"Breaking ground on the SOSA Energy Center so quickly after acquisition demonstrates the velocity with which we are executing and growing Energy Vault's Asset Vault platform," said Robery Piconi, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Energy Vault.
Piconi added that Texas remains a cornerstone market due to its leadership in renewable energy adoption and grid modernization.
Energy Vault stated that the project has secured site control, a clean title, and completed environmental and interconnection milestones. The company will self-perform engineering, procurement, construction, and long-term servicing, allowing it to maintain operational control and capture value across the project lifecycle.
In addition to SOSA, Energy Vault confirmed that off-site construction began in the fourth quarter of 2025 on three additional projects in its near-term pipeline, with expected commercial operations between late 2027 and 2028.
