A public dispute occurred this week between former Representative Colin Allred (D) and State Representative James Talarico (D), after Rep. Talarico allegedly made remarks against him, generating tension into the already competitive Texas U.S. Senate contest.
In a video posted to social media, Allred addressed the comments he said Talarico made about him in a private conversation. Talarico allegedly stated that he signed up to run against a "mediocre Black man," while referring to his competitor for the U.S. Senate Seat and U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) as a "formidable" and "Intelligent" opponent.
Allred strongly condemned the characterization, framing it as part of a broader pattern he said Black men have faced in political and professional spaces.
"If you want to compliment Black women, just do it," said Allred. "Don't do it while also tearing down a Black man. We've seen that thing before, and we're sick and tired of it."

Allred went on to argue that such rhetoric harms communities rather than elevating them, and he suggested the remark reflected more about the speaker than its target. He also used the moment to speak directly to young Black men, encouraging them not to internalize criticism or feel pressure to be "twice as good" to earn legitimacy as leaders.
Allred then ended his video, expressing that those watching should vote for Jasmine Crockett, giving her his endorsement.
State Rep. Talarico later released a press statement disputing Allred's account. He said his remarks were a "mischaracterization of a private conversation," and clarified that his criticism was directed at Allred's campaign strategy, not his life, service, or race.
"I would never attack on the basis of race," Talarico argued.
He acknowledged, however, that given the nation's history, his words could be interpreted differently and expressed regret for the impact they may have caused.
Talarico emphasized that he respects Allred and described both men as being "on the same team," despite their disagreements.
