Marc Veasey Fights Greg Abbot's H-1B Visa Freeze

Congressman Marc Veasey (D-TX) is challenging Governor Greg Abbott's (R-TX) controversial decision to halt specialized work visas at state institutions, declaring that Democrats will not stay quiet about policies affecting education and families.

"Texas Democrats won't stop fighting to protect our communities, your families, and your kid's education," Rep. Veasey posted on X. "If @GregAbbott_TX thinks we'll stay silent, he has another thing coming."

Veasey's statement came after he joined eleven other Democratic lawmakers in sending a February 3rd letter demanding Abbott reverse his January 27th order. The directive blocks Texas state agencies and public universities from filing new H-1B visa applications through May 2027.

H-1B visas allow companies and institutions to hire foreign workers with specialized skills in fields like engineering, medicine, research, and technology. The governor's freeze prevents state universities from bringing in highly trained professionals from other countries.

Current University Issues

The congressional delegation argued this policy hurts Texas students and the state's economy. Universities need these international experts to teach advanced classes, conduct more research, and secure federal grants that fund significant projects.

The letter noted that Texas is home to multiple "R1" universities, which are nationally recognized for leading research and innovation. They compete worldwide and bring in expert faculty members who train students and conduct essential research projects.

Texas universities are already struggling financially because fewer international students are enrolling due to recent federal immigration changes. These students pay tuition and help sustain research programs, so their absence has created budget problems.

The lawmakers are demanding answers by March 2nd, including how universities can get exemptions, whether the rule applies to hospital hiring, and if graduate students will be affected.

They also noted that employers face strict federal requirements for H-1B visas, including a new $100,000 fee.

Along with Veasey, the signatures included:

  • Julie Johnson (D-TX)
  • Veronica Escobar (D-TX)
  • Greg Casar (D-TX)
