A new caucus in the House of Representatives focused on preventing the use of Islamic religious law in the United States has expanded to 38 members spanning 18 states.
The Sharia-Free America Caucus launched in December 2025 under the leadership of Representative Keith Self (R-TX) and Representative Chip Roy (R-TX). The lawmakers say their organization aims to stop Sharia from influencing American courts and communities.
According to the caucus founders, Sharia contradicts the U.S. Constitution and threatens American freedoms. The group is pushing for laws that would prevent judges from considering Islamic law in their decisions and restrict entry to the country for individuals who adhere to Sharia principles.
The caucus supports the Preserving a Sharia-Free America Act and the No Sharia Act. These bills would change both immigration rules and how the legal system operates.
In early February 2026, the group held its inaugural press conference, where Rep. Brandon Gill (R-TX) stated, “The reality is that radical Islam is a political ideology, has a very different conception of freedom of speech than we have in the United States.”
Texas has significant representation in the caucus. Beyond Self and Roy, members include:

The caucus states its mission is to preserve what members call traditional American legal principles and to prevent any adoption of Islamic legal codes in U.S. governmental systems.

“We will not surrender our freedoms. DEFEND THE AMERICAN WAY OF LIFE. BAN SHARIA,” Rep. Self wrote on social media when making the announcement.
