A new statewide survey of 1,070 Texas independent voters found that communication style and perceived tone play a significant role in shaping support in both the Republican and Democratic primaries for the 2026 U.S. Senate race.
The study, commissioned by BallotReady and conducted by Tavern Research with consultation from political scientists at Columbia University, tested independent voters' reactions to Democratic debate clips and Republican written policy messaging.
Researchers found that candidates viewed as steady and solutions-oriented outperformed those seen as combative or strongly partisan.
In the Republican primary portion, respondents reviewed policy positions from U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, U.S. Wesley Hunt, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. Cornyn led on border security with 53%, healthcare with 50%, and the economy and taxes with 56%.
However, when asked who would be the better senator, independents preferred Hunt 41% to 38%.
Thirty percent of Hunt's supporters cited "fresh leadership and generational change" as his main strength. Cornyn was described as competent and pragmatic, though 30% of respondents identified "Trump/MAGA alignment" as a concern.
Paxton drew mixed reactions. 42% of positive mentions described him as "patriotic," but criticism focused on immigration drew 16%, and a "litigation-first" leadership style was also at 16%
In the Democratic primary testing, Independents favored State Rep. James Talarico over U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett 76% to 24% after viewing clips from a January 24 debate. Before exposure to the testing, Talarico led 56% to 44%. Respondents cited his calm demeanor, relatability, and preparedness as key strengths.
Crockett, however, received praise for passion but faced criticism regarding tone and clarity.
The Study suggests that Independent voters are not uniformly rejecting conservative or progressive policy positions. Instead, they are valuing steady, solutions-oriented communications as much as policy positions, which could significantly shape outcomes in the 2026 Texas Senate race.
