While the Trump administration touts its progress in the ongoing conflict in Iran, opposing sides are clashing as the Iran war becomes a growing point of contention heading into the 2026 midterm elections.
Republicans, for the most part, are backing President Donald Trump’s military action, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio leading the charge on the matter. President Trump has also hinted that the United States could possibly set its sights on actions toward Cuba next.
Democrats and Libertarians, on the other hand, are singing a different tune, with both condemning the Trump administration’s military actions.
In a statement, the Libertarian Party of Travis County condemned the attacks, saying that “military intervention without a formal declaration of war by Congress is a direct violation of the United States Constitution and undermines the rule of law that the American republic was founded on.”

“Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution clearly grants Congress – not the executive branch – the authority to declare war,” the statement continued.
Despite its opposition to President Trump’s military action, the Libertarian Party of Travis County emphasized that its position “should not be misinterpreted as support for Iran’s late Supreme Leader or the policies of the Iranian regime.”
“The Libertarian Party of Travis County opposes authoritarianism and the abuse of power wherever it occurs. However, rejecting tyranny abroad does not justify abandoning the rule of law or constitutional limits at home.”
Ted Brown, the Libertarian Party candidate for the Texas U.S. Senate, also opposes the military action, writing, “I fully concur with this statement” in response to the party’s condemnation on social media.
Following the strikes carried out as part of “Operation Epic Fury” last month, incumbent Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) released a statement backing the war, saying that “for too long, Iran and its tentacles of terror have destabilized the Middle East and waged an all-out assault on the West and our values.”
Calling the strikes a potential beginning for the Iranian people to finally achieve freedom, Senator Cornyn signaled his full support for the president’s actions.
Senator Cornyn must first defeat Attorney General Ken Paxton in the upcoming Republican runoff election before advancing to the November election, where he could potentially face State Representative James Talarico (D-TX).
State Rep. Talarico has similarly condemned the military action, warning that the Trump administration is repeating the “same mistakes” made during the Bush administration in the lead-up to the Iraq war.
“We’re always told that we don’t have enough money for schools or for healthcare or for our veterans,” state Rep. Talarico said during an interview with CBS Mornings, “but there’s always enough money to bomb people on the other side of the world.”
