Trump Pushes Third Reconciliation Bill With SAVE America Act Attached

President Donald Trump is demanding that Congress pass a third $350 billion reconciliation bill that includes the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act to restore military resources and uphold election integrity.

Last night, Trump posted on Truth Social that the fund would support development of the Golden Dome missile defense system, expand production of F-47 and B-21 aircraft and “supercharge our ammunition stockpiles.”

The SAVE Act, which Trump said the Department of Defense has asked to be attached to the funding bill, would require all voters to provide proof of citizenship, photo ID and largely bans mail-in ballots except for certain cases.

“No games, no delays and no weak compromises! Do this ASAP,” Trump said.

The order comes as tensions between the United States and Iran escalate, with both countries exchanging strikes in recent days, possibly straining U.S. ammunition stockpiles. It was also posted hours after Trump signed the $70 billion reconciliation bill for immigration enforcement agencies, which took months to move through the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The SAVE Act has also stalled in the Senate after four Republican Senators voted against adding it to the third reconciliation bill. Members from both sides are raising concerns over the bill's proof-of-citizenship requirements and would disenfranchise eligible voters.

The wavering support for the bill has caused Trump to publicly pressure multiple Republican members, including Senator John Cornyn (R-TX).

Although Sen. Cornyn is an original co-sponsor of the bill and has long supported it, Trump said he did not push for it in the Senate at the end of May, prompting him to endorse Sen. Cornyn’s then U.S. Senate candidacy opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton.

“Ken’s opponent was VERY disloyal to me, as President, and didn’t fight hard enough for the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT,” Trump fumed on Truth Social.

But Sen. Cornyn has consistently supported the bill. In March, he reversed his long-held support of the Senate filibuster, a rule that requires 60 votes to advance most legislation in the Senate, to increase the odds of passing the SAVE Act.

“We can let the Democrats keep obstructing today and then smash the rules the first chance they get,” Sen. Cornyn said in an op-ed for the New York Post. “Or we can act now and use the mandate the American people gave this president and this Congress to secure our elections, protect our homeland and bring back common sense.”

Other Texas Democrats worry the act would create more problems for voters than it solves.

“It creates problems for women who have gotten married and whose birth certificate needed to prove citizenship no longer matches their legal name,” Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D-TX) said, adding that non-U.S. citizens are already legally barred from voting in federal elections.

If the concern was to strengthen voter security, Rep. Julie Johnson (D-TX) said Americans should be able to submit these forms online. Many of her constituents work hours that would not allow them to show this proof in person or pay for physical copies to show, she said.

“What should be our number one paramount concern of this committee is how do we make sure that we do not disenfranchise millions of voters in this country, and this bill does just that,” Rep. Johnson said.
