New Legislation Would Make Federal Mortgages Restricted to Citizens Only

Federal mortgages would be restricted to U.S. citizens under the Homeownership Eligibility Reform Act, introduced by Rep. Brandon Gill (R-Texas).

What would the act do?

The act would codify an administrative order making undocumented immigrants ineligible for federal mortgage insurance under the Federal Housing Administration (FHA).

Federal mortgages offer lower down payments and have less criteria for securing the loan, making homeownership easier for Americans. The new bill would block American tax dollars from funding mortgages for illegal immigrants and non-permanent immigrants.

"Congress created the FHA in 1934 to help Americans achieve homeownership. Not illegal aliens. Not noncitizens. Americans," Gill wrote on X.

In 2025, non-permanent residents residing in the U.S.were blocked from receiving FHA mortgages. The new legislation introduced by Gill would also block green card holders.

The bill is part of a wave of legislation introduced during the Trump administration aiming to rollback benefits given to non-citizens, non-permanent residents and green card holders.
