Toyota Expands San Antonio Manufacturing Plant with $3.6B Investment

Governor Greg Abbott (R) announced that Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas will invest $3.6 billion to build a second vehicle assembly line in San Antonio. The expansion will double the plant's manufacturing footprint and create 2,000 new jobs, supported by a Texas Enterprise Fund grant and the state's JETI program.

What is Toyota expanding?

Toyota Motor Manufacturing Texas will significantly expand its San Antonio manufacturing operations by constructing a second vehicle assembly line.

The project represents a $3.6 billion capital investment that will:

  • Qualification under the Texas Jobs, Energy, Technology, and Innovation (JETI) program.

What Gov. Abbott is saying

Governor Greg Abbott called the expansion another example of Texas' leadership in advanced manufacturing.

Gov. Greg Abbott: "Texas is where the world builds bigger, and Toyota shows it once more with a $3.6 billion expansion in San Antonio that doubles their factory footprint and creates 2,000 new jobs."

Gov. Abbott continued: "This Texas-sized investment reflects the strength of our workforce and the unmatched business advantages found only in our state."

Toyota's growing Texas footprint

Toyota has operated in San Antonio for more than two decades.

The company:

  • Broke ground on its San Antonio plant in 2003.
  • Began vehicle production in 2006.
  • Currently operates a 2.2-million-square-foot manufacturing facility.
  • Produces the Toyota Tundra and Toyota Sequoia.

With the new expansion:

  • Total investment in the San Antonio campus will reach $8.3 billion.
  • The facility will employ approximately 6,100 workers.
  • Twenty-three on-site suppliers employ another 5,600 people.

Toyota Motor North America has also maintained its North American headquarters in Plano since 2014, where approximately 6,600 employees work at the company's $1 billion campus.

The Bottom Line

Toyota is doubling its manufacturing footprint in San Antonio through a $3.6 billion expansion that will create 2,000 new jobs backed by Texas incentive programs and further solidifying the state's role as a leading destination for advanced manufacturing.
