Al Green Calls Out Pattern of Deadly ICE Encounters After Maine Shooting

Congressman Al Green (D-TX) is calling for immediate congressional oversight after an ICE agent fatally shot a man in Biddeford, Maine, the latest in a series of deadly encounters involving federal immigration enforcement that Green says has gone unaccounted for.

The shooting happened Monday morning around 8 a.m. at the intersection of Pool Street and Hill Street in Biddeford.

Biddeford Police confirmed ICE personnel were involved, and Maine Governor Janet Mills (D-ME) confirmed shortly after noon that a person had died as a result. Maine State Police, the FBI, and the state Attorney General's Office all responded to the scene.

Details about the victim and the circumstances of the shooting remain disputed. Senator Angus King (I-ME) said he was told by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that the man killed was in his 20s, had been ordered to leave the country, and had allegedly used his vehicle as a weapon before being shot by an ICE agent.

However, the Maine Immigrant Rights Coalition identified the victim as a 26-year-old Colombian man who was authorized to work in the United States and held a valid Social Security number, and said he was on his way to work when the encounter occurred.

Federal officials have not confirmed those details.

Congressional Oversight

Green emphasized that the shooting fits a deeply troubling pattern. He responded directly, addressing President Donald Trump in a statement posted online. "YOUR ICE force has killed a person in Maine," he wrote. "After the killings of Good, Pretti, and Araujo, without accountability, we cannot trust YOUR Homeland Security or Justice Dept. to investigate ICE. 'We The People' demand accountability and Congressional oversight."

Green's reference to Good, Pretti, and Araujo points to three other people who died in ICE-related incidents in recent months, cases that have drawn significant criticism over the lack of transparency and independent accountability in how the deaths were handled.

Community reaction in Biddeford was swift, with anti-ICE protesters gathered on the streets within hours of the shooting, and advocacy groups called for justice for the victim's family.

An investigation involving the FBI and Maine's Attorney General's Office is underway, though federal authorities have yet to publicly comment on the specifics of what occurred.
