ASP Isotopes Subsidiary, Texas A&M Partner on Nuclear Fuel Research

ASP Isotopes subsidiary Quantum Leap Energy has signed a research agreement with the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station to advance uranium conversion technology, supporting efforts to strengthen the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain and expand U.S. energy security.

Research partnership announced

ASP Isotopes Inc. announced that its wholly owned subsidiary, Quantum Leap Energy (QLE), has entered into a research agreement with the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station (TESS).

The collaboration will focus on advancing the commercial production of high-purity uranium hexafluoride (UF6), a key material used in nuclear fuel enrichment.

According to the company, the partnership reflects growing momentum within Texas' nuclear industry while supporting efforts to expand domestic nuclear fuel production.

Addressing a critical supply chain gap

Uranium conversion transforms yellowcake uranium into uranium hexafluoride, the feedstock required for uranium enrichment.

QLE noted that the United States currently has only one operating commercial uranium conversion facility, making additional domestic conversion capacity important for reducing reliance on foreign suppliers.

The research aims to improve production efficiency, reduce costs, and support commercialization of new conversion technologies.

What the research will study

Under the agreement, QLE and TEEs will collect physicochemical data on the chemical reactions involved in converting uranium concentrate into UF6.

The research is expected to support:

  • Improved uranium conversion efficiency.
  • Lower production costs.
  • Process modeling and engineering.
  • Commercial-scale production planning.
  • Optimization of future uranium conversion facilities.

The findings will help guide future technology development and commercialization efforts.

Officials highlight collaboration

Quantum Leap Energy CEO Dr. Ryno Pretorius said expanding domestic uranium conversion capabilities is essential for strengthening America's energy security.

Dr. Ryno Pretorius: "Today, the United States has only one operating commercial conversion facility, making the expansion of domestic conversion capabilities essential to strengthening our nation's energy security and reducing reliance on foreign sources."

TEES Associate Agency Director Dr. Lin Shao said the collaboration between industry, government, and academia is critical to advancing the nuclear fuel supply chain.

Dr. Lin Shao: "This agreement pairs our research capabilities with QLE's commercial efforts towards uranium conversion, generating the data and insights needed to support safer, more efficient, and more scalable nuclear fuel production."
