The Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) is creating the Rural Hospital Officers Academy to provide free professional development and training for rural health care leaders across the state.
The HHSC is launching the Rural Hospital Officers Academy as part of a broader state effort to strengthen rural health care infrastructure.
The academy was created through House Bill 18, which was passed during the 89th Texas Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Greg Abbott. An advisory committee held its first meeting in July to begin developing the program's curriculum.
The program will provide professional development and continuing education for leaders responsible for managing rural hospitals and health care systems throughout Texas.

The Rural Hospital Officers Academy is designed for individuals responsible for maintaining the financial health and operations of rural hospitals.

The goal of the academy is to provide rural health leaders with practical skills to address challenges facing smaller health care facilities.
HHSC Executive Commissioner Stephanie Muth said rural hospital leaders face ongoing challenges as they manage budgets, operations, and changing health care requirements.
She said the academy will provide leaders with Texas-focused training they can use in their communities.
