CenterPoint Energy Announces 10 Commitments to Modernize Texas Grid

CenterPoint Energy is outlining a new Texas-first approach to expanding and modernizing the state's electric transmission system, promising greater community involvement and billions of dollars in anticipated economic benefits.

The company's new "10 Commitments for Texans" will guide major transmission projects requiring approval from the Public Utility Commission of Texas. CenterPoint said the effort is intended to strengthen reliability and resiliency as Texas' population and electricity demand continues to grow.

CenterPoint promises more community Input

A major part of the initiative focuses on giving landowners more opportunities to weigh in on proposed transmission routes. CenterPoint plans to extend initial comment periods to 30 days, hold multiple rounds of open houses and webinars, and provide property owners with additional time to intervene after projects are submitted to regulators.

The company also pledged to work toward acquiring at least 95% of required property without using eminent domain and said it will offer above-market valuations and flexible payment options to affected landowners.

Billions in economic benefits expected

CenterPoint estimates its upcoming projects could support approximately 41,000 Texas jobs, generating about $4.4 billion in salaries and local economic activity. The company also anticipates roughly 1,100 permanent jobs once projects are completed.

The infrastructure could generate an estimated $120 million annually in new tax revenue for local schools and public services, according to a third-party economic impact study cited by the company.

Affordability and environmental protections

CenterPoint said it will prioritize customer affordability and expects its transmission improvements to help ERCOT customers save more than $100 million annually as demand grows.

The company also pledged to review existing utility corridors, avoid waterways and wetlands where possible, and work with farmers and ranchers to reduce impacts on agricultural land.

CenterPoint said it is currently in the planning and community outreach phase of its transmission improvement efforts.
