New Poll Moves Texas Governor Race Toward Gina Hinojosa

The Texas Governor's race is becoming increasingly competitive, with the Cook Political Report moving its rating in Democrat Gina Hinojosa's direction as recent polling shows her closing the gap with Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

Cook cited several potential vulnerabilities for Abbott, including his positions on data centers and school vouchers, as well as the aggressive redistricting plan he supported. The report also pointed to Hinojosa's potential strength with Latino voters and her ties to the Rio Grande Valley.

The shift comes after a series of recent polls show a much closer race than earlier in the campaign. Hinojosa's campaign says six polls released over the past three weeks have placed the contest within the margin of error, with recent surveys showing Abbott holding leads ranging from one to four points.

"For over a decade, Greg Abbott has prioritized his billionaire donors over working Texans – and this November, we vote for change," said Hinojosa. "Our momentum is building because Texans are excited about our plan to secure the American Dream by saving public schools and putting money into the pockets of Texans."

Hinojosa has gained ground as her statewide name recognition has increased. Her campaign says the race has moved from an eight-point Abbott advantage in January to roughly a one-point contest in recent polling. One Texas Pulse poll released in August showed Abbott at 46% and Hinojosa at 45%.

Still, the race remains an uphill battle for Hinojosa. Abbott holds significant financial advantages and continues to lead in several statewide surveys. Inside Elections currently rates the race Likely Republican.

With less than three months before Election Day, the tightening polls suggest Hinojosa has made the race more competitive, but Abbott remains the favorite to win as the campaign enters its final stretch.
