The race between Rep. Lizzie Fletcher (D) and Army Veteran Wesley Hunt in Texas’ 7th congressional district is considered a “toss-up,” but because the district has historically gone Republican, could Hunt pull off an upset this election cycle?

Rep. Fletcher comes off as moderate or centrist Democrat, especially when it comes to energy. Considering that tens of thousands of Texans are gainfully employed within the oil & gas sector, Fletcher has no choice but to sound supportive of an industry that employs so many of her constituents.

“House Resolution 109 relies too much on top-down, government solutions that will deepen partisan divisions, harm our economy, and squander our unique opportunity to get this right,” stated Rep. Fletcher in an op-ed in the Houston Chronicle

Fletcher has also come out against the “defund the police” movement, saying that it is “not the right approach” to dealing with the justice system.

But just as she says that she is against abolishing or defunding police, Fletcher co-sponsored the Justice in Policing Act of 2020, a measure that cuts off federal funding for local and state police departments that do not conform with what the bill calls for.

In other words, police will be defunded if they do not follow Fletcher’s bill.

Republican Wesley Hunt has challenged Fletcher’s 2018 “promises of moderation and bipartisanship,” accusing the freshman congresswoman of  “appeasing the radicals” in her political party’s base of support and supporting the Progressive agenda Speaker Nancy Pelosi has put forth.

“Once again, Lizzie Fletcher, Nancy Pelosi and Washington liberals have shown that they are more interested in appeasing the radicals in their base than working on real substantive reform policies to combat abuses by police,” said Hunt. “

In an earlier press release, Hunt stated that because Fletcher has given her full-throated support for vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris if both Joe Biden and Harris introduce “new radical energy policies,” Fletcher would “absolutely give them her vote, just as she’s given her vote to Nancy Pelosi 99% of the time.

“Lizzie Fletcher’s overwhelming support of Senator Harris, despite her anti-energy and anti-Texas rhetoric, demonstrates her willingness to put the goals of the liberal Democratic Party over the health and future of her district,” stated Hunt

We dug into Hunt’s claim that Fletcher has voted with Pelosi 99 percent of the time and found that according to the Independent ProPublica, Fletcher has voted 99 percent of the time with Speaker Pelosi aforementioned legislative agenda.

We have reached out to Fletcher’s legislative office on two occasions for comment about her position on the Green New Deal, but have yet to hear back from the congresswoman or her legislative aides.

Fletcher can't run from her voting record, so if President Trump manages to pull of the win it will because Americans from every corner of the country, including those residing in Texas CD 7, came out in droves to vote Republican. It could be a long night for Fletcher and Democrats.
