Rep. Joaquin Castro (D) just inched a little closer in becoming the next chairman of the Foreign Affairs committee in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Rep. Brad Sherman, one of the two House members challenging Rep, Castro for the job, has decided to drop out of race, leaving Castro to face off against Rep. Gregory Meeks.

Castro, who is the current vice chairman of the committee,  commended Rep. Sherman for the “hard work on the House Foreign Affairs Committee” and said he would e pressing forward with his efforts to become the next chairman of the highly sought after committee post.

“Over the last few months, I’ve shared my vision to rebuild America’s infrastructure of diplomacy — and I will ask the Democratic Caucus for their support to chair @HouseForeign," stated Castro.

With the support of fellow Progressive Democrats in the the House liike Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and that of Rep. Ilhan Omar, who sits on the committee, Castro is expected to win his race against Rep. Meeks.

Castro’s foreign policy bona fides were solidified over that past four years, as the chairman of the Democrat-only Hispanic Caucus took on the Trump administration, in particular the Department of Homeland Security, over the policies and treatment of illegal aliens that were detained along the border with Mexico.
