Dallas, TXTexas Politics caught up with former Florida Congressman and current Texas gubernatorial candidate Allen West (R), who while praising Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) and calling him the "gold standard for gubernatorial leadership," also made it a point to contrast DeSantis' handling of the COVID pandemic to how the Texas Gov. Greg Abbott COVID lockdown unfolded.

Fmr. Rep. West said that he and his fellow Texans wished the COVID-19 restrictions would have been lifted sooner than they were, adding that some "10,000 small businesses" were lost in Texas as a result of the statewide shutdown imposed by Gov. Greg Abbott (R).

Texas Politics: What do you make of Gov. Abbott's pivot and how he has changed since Gov. DeSantis started lifting bans and almost mimicking the Florida Governor"

Allen West: "Well there's no doubt that right now you're talking about the gold standard for gubernatorial leadership on the Republican side in the United States of America we see Governor DeSantis being that.  And we wish we had a lifting of a lot of those restrictions a lot earlier in Texas.  We lost close to 10,000 small businesses here in Texas, and no elected official has enumerated power to decide who or what is essential.  Yet we had to suffer through that out here again."
