Texas Senator Ted Cruz (R) has verified that Gov. Greg Abbott (R) will be able to have fleeing Democrats arrested. Democratic Members of the Texas Legislature that left Austin for Washington, did so to avoid having to vote for that state’s election integrity bill.
After 51 smiling and non-mask-wearing Democrats boarded private jets to avoid voting, Gov. Abbott stated that once they step foot back in Texas, “they will be arrested.”
Texas legislature has now voted to have fleeing Democrats arrested if they do not return. They could still be arrested upon return.
Sen. Cruz was on the Fox News Channel where he said that when he was Solicitor General of Texas, his then-boss was Attorney General Greg Abbott asked him if he had the authority to have arrest fleeing Democrats for refusing to cast their vote on redistricting.
Gov. Abbott does have the authority to arrest the fleeing legislators.
“I did the research, and it turns out the answer is ‘Yes.’ Under the Texas constitution there's a provision that explicitly gives the speaker the authority to arrest fleeing House members that provision is copied word for word from the US Constitution,” asserted Sen. Cruz
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick (R) called the explanations Texas Democrats were giving for leaving the state “damn lies” and reiterated that these legislators would be arrested.
Cruz’s fellow Texas Senator, Sen. John Cornyn (R), said that it was an “un-Texan thing to do” and that Texans don’t “cut and run.”
Gov. Abbott also ridiculed Democrats for “cutting and running” from a problem.
