Rep. Crenshaw Fires Back at Ben and Jerry’s July 4 Tweet

In a fiery response, Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw (R) addressed ice cream company, Ben and Jerry’s, recent tweet calling for giving back land to Native Americans.

“This 4th of July, it's high time we recognize that the US exists on stolen Indigenous land and commit to returning it. Learn more and take action now: benjerrys.co/46vrYu3,” said the ice cream company.

The Texas lawmaker challenged the brand to actually returning the land they specifically owned to Native American tribes.

“What’s stopping you? Go ahead — give up all your property. It would be easy to do, so why aren’t you doing it? Make sure you ask the stores that sell your ice cream to shut down also. And why not ask your customers to give up their property too? We can’t be worried about Cherry Garcia when injustices have gone unaddressed!”

Rep. Crenshaw then called out what he viewed as a bluff from the frozen dessert-selling company

“Oh, I know why you don’t: because this is just some ill-thought out liberal virtue signaling rant. Good job.”

Ben and Jerry’s has faced their share of criticism over the years. Recently, the company was accused of antisemitism after the decision to boycott Israel by refusing to sell its ice cream in the country or its settlements.

The company has denied any antisemitism and its parent company eventually reached an agreement to sell the dairy dessert in Israel.

In other news, Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) recently rebuffed the Republicans’ idea of using “military action” to take down Mexican cartels. 

Many conservative lawmakers have been pushing for more forceful action against the cartels. However, Rep. Castro believed that to be a “dangerous” plan.

“The Republicans calling for military action against Mexico are taking us down a dangerous road. The U.S. and Mexico need to work together to address violence and drug trafficking – but the U.S. must also take responsibility for our role in fueling these crises,” said Rep. Castro.

The Texas congressman pointed out how the cartels, known for the illegal smuggling of drugs, operate. Furthermore, the Representative gave his view on how to prevent the drug crisis.

“Cartels profit by meeting U.S. demand for drugs. To meaningfully fight fentanyl trafficking, we need more investments in addiction prevention + treatment. In May, @HouseForeign passed my amendment expanding joint efforts to address youth drug use- a first step to curb demand.”
