The House passed Texas Rep. Michael McCaul’s (R) resolution to condemn Hamas and associates over their terrorist actions. However, all eyes are on Democrat lawmakers who voted against the resolution. Republicans and Democrats alike have denounced Hamas and sympathizers, but some Democrats are drawing criticism over their lack of support for Israel.
On social media, McCaul announced that his resolution had successfully passed the House, sharing that “the House just passed my bipartisan resolution condemning Hamas and its sponsors for their atrocities against humanity.”
McCaul went on to write that “with the most cosponsors of any resolution ever, this measure sends a clear message across the globe: The U.S. stands with Israel.”
Despite the number of cosponsors, there were some names that did vote against the resolution, and those lawmakers have attracted criticism from members of their own party over their criticism of Israel.
Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D), Missouri Rep. Cori Bush (D), New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D), Indiana Rep. Andre Carson (D), Texas Rep. Al Green (D), Pennsylvania Rep. Summer Lee, New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D), Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar (D), and Illinois Rep. Delia Ramirez (D) voted against the resolution.
Rep. Tlaib took part in a protest earlier this month, denouncing Israel for an alleged airstrike on a hospital in Gaza. However, the airstrike was in fact caused by Hamas. Despite this, Tlaib has not rescinded her criticism, which has resulted in Republican efforts to censure the Michigan Democrat.
Tlaib has similarly attracted criticism from members of her own party.
Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) was asked about Tlaib’s involvement in the press conference denouncing Israel for the alleged attack, and Wasserman Schultz commented that Tlaib was “fanning the flames” that could lead to people being hurt.
As previously mentioned, Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R) is expected to introduce a measure to censure Tlaib.
