Texas lawmakers took to social media to share their mixed responses to the impeachment of Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas. In Congress’s second attempt, Mayorkas was impeached in a controversial 214-213 vote.
Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) stated that the decision was emblematic of the GOP’s unwillingness to fix issues.
“Republicans don’t want solutions to the migrant crisis. They refuse to fund DHS and derailed the senate border bill. They are unwilling to do their jobs, so as a distraction tonight, they voted to impeach Sec. Mayorkas. Shame on them,” tweeted Rep. Garcia.

Texas Congressman Wesley Hunt (R) gave a long statement explaining his reasoning for voting to impeach Mayorkas.
“Statement on the Impeachment of DHS Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas: Tonight, for the second time in a week, I have voted to impeach Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas,” said Rep. Hunt.
“And tonight, he was rightfully impeached for his failure to secure the American Homeland. The number one issue facing Americans is the illegal invasion at our southern border. Enough fentanyl has entered this country to kill every single American five times,” continued Hunt.
The Texas representative pointed to border security as a more focal point for stopping terrorism.
“Hundreds on the terror watchlist have been released into the U.S. interior. And under the watch of Secretary Mayorkas, Mexican cartels have taken over operational control at our southern border,” said the Texas lawmaker.
Hunt continued, “Every single one of us, including the Secretary of Homeland Security, have taken an oath to the United States Constitution to defend this nation against all enemies, both foreign and domestic, and thanks to Mayorkas’ failure we now have both enemies foreign and domestic roaming the American countryside.”
“Mayorkas deserved to be IMPEACHED, and now he deserves to be REMOVED,” concluded Hunt.

Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia (D) claimed that the impeachment was inauthentic.
“Tonight, @HouseGOP continued to prioritize stunts over solutions while accomplishing nothing for the American people. Read my statement below,” said Rep. Garcia.
The Texas congresswoman stated that Mayorkas broke “no laws” and that the impeachment would go “nowhere”.

Mayorkas was accused of mishandling migrants who crossed the border and illegally sending them into the U.S. instead of detaining them. The impeachment votes are expected to fail in the Senate.
