After months of speculation, West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin (I) officially switched his party from Democrat to Independent.

“Our national politics are broken and neither party is willing to compromise to find common ground,” said Sen. Manchin. “To stay true to myself and remain committed to put country before party, I have decided to register as an independent with no party affiliation and continue to fight for America’s sensible majority.”

Manchin has long been critical of the Democratic party for what he views as growing radicalism. Furthermore, on several occasions, the congressman has voted against party lines. Many have criticized Manchin for appearing to straddle the fence on controversial issues and being unwilling to sponsor some policies that try to address climate change.

Manchin joins a small group of Senate independents that include the former Democrat, Arizona Senator Krysten Sinema. Like Sen. Sinema, who won’t seek re-election after this term, Manchin has stated that he will not run for Senate again.

“I believe in my heart of hearts that I have accomplished what I set out to do for West Virginia,” said Sen. Manchin regarding ending his term as senator.

Manchin continued, “I have made one of the toughest decisions of my life and decided that I will not be running for re-election to the United States Senate, but what I will be doing is traveling the country and speaking out to see if there is an interest in creating a movement to mobilize the middle and bring Americans together.”

Manchin has toyed with several political ideas, with some thinking that he would enter the presidential race. Some have speculated that he will run for governor, instead.

It’s worth noting that Manchin does not have to vote in opposition to Democrats and has stated that he will continue to caucus with Democrats.
