During an interview with Meet the Press, President Donald Trump (R) caused headlines after expressing his disapproval of birthright citizenship. Those who are wary of the president-elect’s incoming administration quickly denouncing it and issuing a stark warning about the President’s immigration plan. Responding to President Trump’s comments, Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D) warned that his remarks are “a threat to all.”
In the interview that aired over the weekend, President Trump hammered away at the idea of birthright citizenship.
When asked if he would attempt to “get around” the 14th amendment given that it provides citizenship to all people born in the country, President Trump said “well, we’ll have to get a change. We’ll maybe have to go back to the people, but we have to end it.”
President Trump has maintained his hardline stance on immigration, which has divided the public. Americans believed that he was the most fit to respond to immigration concerns, but many have rallied against his plan to institute mass deportations. Some even argue that he might attempt to deport citizens of the country.
“You know, we’re the only country that has [birthright citizenship]?” the president questioned, suggesting that the United States should change course.

Commenting on the president-elect’s comments, Rep. Crockett issued a scathing response, writing on social media that “the 14th Amendment granted citizenship for those born or naturalized in the U.S. – including the formerly enslaved.”
“Chipping away at the 14th is a threat to ALL – immigrant families, naturalized citizens, and millions of descendants of those held in the bonds of slavery,” Rep. Crockett added.
Last week, the Texas Democrat shared her concerns over Texas’ census count. During a House Oversight Committee hearing, she grilled the director of the U.S. Census Bureau and accused Texas Republicans of wanting to suppress minorities and help elect “Anglos” to congress.
“We’re gonna end that because it’s ridiculous,” President Trump reiterated in his interview, suggesting that he could pursue it through executive action.
