The much-anticipated race to be the Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives didn’t live up to the hype, as Rep. Dustin Burrows (R) decisively knocked out Rep. David Cook (R) with a vote total of 85-55.
Rep. Burrows, who was seen as the more establishment candidate, upset the more conservative Rep. Cook and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, and President-elect Donald Trump, who both backed his speakership run.
“The duty bestowed upon me today as Speaker of the Texas House is one of immense responsibility and honor, and I thank each of my colleagues for their trust and vote of confidence,” stated Burrows in a social media posting.
“While the majority will guide our course, the House’s strength lies in its diversity, and my leadership will be dedicated to ensuring every voice is heard and every district represented this session.”
With a little help from Texas Democrats, Rep. Burrows was able to overtake Rep. Cook, and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is letting everyone know.
“Today, on the second ballot, Republican Dustin Burrows was elected Speaker of the Texas House with a majority of Democrats and a minority of Republican votes. Despite having a clear majority of Republican votes, Rep. David Cook, R-Mansfield, was defeated. Speaker Burrows was handed the speakership by Democrats, as has happened behind closed doors session after session since 2009. This may be the first time in our nation’s history where the minority party openly elected the speaker of a legislative body instead of the majority party," stated Patrick on. "X"
One can only imagine how the 2025 legislative session in Texas is going to go for Conservative Republicans.
