Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R) announced his committee assignments this week, which has ignited controversy within Texas Republicans. Texas House Democratic Caucus Chair Gene Wu (D) praised the selections as a step toward bipartisanship, but some GOP members argue the appointments empower Democrats.
Chair Wu released a statement responding to the committee assignments, applauding Speaker Burrows’ approach and emphasizing that Democrats will have a strong presence in leadership positions.
“Today’s committee assignments by Speaker Burrows demonstrate a commitment to bipartisanship and upholding the institutional norms of the Texas House of Representatives,” the chairman expressed.
He noted that 30 Democratic lawmakers have been appointed as committee vice chairs, while 10 Democrats will serve as subcommittee chairs and vice chairs. Moreover, Democratic Representative Joe Moody (D) has been named Speaker Pro Tempore, a key leadership role in the House.
Chair Wu believes these appointments will allow Democrats to effectively advocate for their communities and push policies that benefit working families.
“Our state has unprecedented resources and opportunities – now we need the political will to come together to invest in our future, protect our freedoms, and return power to working families,” he further commented.
However, Republican Rep. Brian Harrison (R) strongly criticized the committee assignments, arguing that they empower Democrats in a Republican-controlled chamber. Rep. Harrison pointed out that 58% of House Democrats were given leadership positions, compared to only 40% of Republicans.

Rep. Harrison’s comments reflect broader frustration among some Texas Republicans, who have been vocal in their opposition to Speaker Burrows’ leadership. Critics within the GOP argue that Democrats should not hold so many influential roles, especially considering that Republicans hold a majority in the Texas House.
Despite the backlash, Speaker Burrows has defended his appointments, maintaining that his selections will ensure the House operates effectively.
