Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows (R) has announced the committee assignments for the 89th Texas Legislature. The announcement concludes an extensive process of meeting with House members to determine their committee preferences and legislative priorities.
In a statement, Speaker Burrows emphasized the significance of the committee assignments, expressing that “assigning members to committees is among the most significant and intricate responsibilities of the Speaker – one that demands thoughtful consideration and a delicate balance of many factors.”
The Texas speaker noted that the process was not just about filling seats. Instead, it was about ensuring that each member contributes their expertise where it truly makes a difference.

Despite Speaker Burrows’ emphasis on fairness and efficiency, his leadership still faces opposition and criticism from his GOP colleagues. Texas Republicans continue to voice their frustration over his collaboration with Democrats, which played a significant role in Speaker Burrows securing the speakership earlier this year.
The press release announcing the assignments shared that GOP members chair all House committees, which ties the record for the most Republican committee chairs in Texas House history. However, Democrats hold vice-chair positions in every committee, which Republicans worried would be the case.
As well, Democrats chair most of the subcommittees, and they have also secured several vice-chair roles in the subcommittees. These appointments have led to concerns among some Republicans who feel that Democrats will wield too much influence over the legislative process despite being in the minority.
Speaker Burrows defended his approach to the appointments, stressing that “taking the time to get this right was not just necessary – it is what Texans deserve of their government.”
Republicans however argue that the committee assignments do not reflect the GOP’s legislative mandate and could slow progress on key conservative priorities, including border security, tax relief, and DEI reforms in public institutions.
