Texas Rep. Chip Roy (R) released a statement praising the House passage of a budget resolution aimed at reducing federal spending and extending tax cuts, calling it a historic step toward fiscal responsibility. However, the Texas Republican warned that more aggressive action is needed to rein in the deficit and shrink the size of the federal government.
"Congress is so pitiful that the mere fact of a budget resolution reducing the growth of so-called 'mandatory' (i.e., automatic) spending—and tying the extension of tax cuts to those spending reductions—is, sadly, an historic event," Rep. Roy said in the statement.
The budget resolution, which establishes a framework for future fiscal policy, includes at least $1.5 trillion in mandatory spending reductions. He emphasized the need for reforming government programs such as Medicaid and food assistance, arguing that they are plagued by “waste, fraud, and abuse.” He further stressed that this figure should be considered a baseline, not a limit, for spending reductions.

Moreover, the resolution provides for significant tax relief by extending the 2017 Trump tax cuts, ensuring that any further tax reductions are tied to spending cuts.
Rep. Roy warned that failing to maintain this connection would allow the deficit to continue growing.
He also highlighted the role of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in holding the federal government accountable for excessive spending. He argued that the initiative should not just be a tool for exposing wasteful contracts but should actively drive legislative efforts to cut government expenditures.
His support for the budget resolution relied on additional measures in a final reconciliation bill, including a discretionary spending freeze to account for future emergency spending, the full repeal of Green New Deal subsidies in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), and the termination of President Joe Biden’s (D) student loan forgiveness program.
Though Rep. Roy acknowledged the resolution as a necessary step, he made it clear that more work remains to be done.
"We took one necessary step, but there are many miles to go," he said, urging his colleagues to follow through on the resolution’s framework to deliver tangible results for the American people.
