Texas Legislature Will Debate Bills Loosening Gun Regulations

This week, the Texas Legislature is set to discuss a series of controversial gun-related bills that would further loosen Texas’ gun regulations. The proposed legislation has drawn strong criticism from Democratic lawmakers, including state Representative Vikki Goodwin (D), who voiced her disapproval on social media.

In a video posted on X, state Rep. Goodwin urged Texans to make their voices heard, warning that the bills would allow firearms in sensitive locations such as schools and polling places. She also pointed to a proposal that would lower the legal age to purchase a handgun from 21 to 18.

“Have your voice heard on gun laws in Texas,” she wrote in an accompanying caption. “It is a slap in the face to the families from Uvalde, Santa Fe, El Paso and all over Texas who want to have SENSIBLE gun regulations.”

She added, “No one is talking about taking away your guns! Well, unless you have just been convicted of assaulting your wife, then perhaps we should talk about temporarily removing your gun, right?”

The Texas Democrat criticized lawmakers for refusing to consider legislation that would raise the age to purchase assault-style weapons. Instead, she questioned, “they are hoping to lower the age to buy handguns to take away the argument of ‘why do we treat rifles and handguns differently?’”

Citing public safety concerns, she compared the proposed gun law changes to the era before seat belt regulations helped reduce vehicular fatalities. “Gun deaths are the leading cause of death among youth 18 years and younger in Texas,” she commented. “It’s time to implement gun safety laws that reduce the deaths, injury, and trauma of gun violence.”

The Texas Legislature’s decisions this week are expected to reignite a hot button as the legislature itself faces criticism over its controversial leadership.
