Texas Senate Unites to Condemn Political Violence

The Texas Senate Republican and Democratic Caucuses have joined forces to issue a statement condemning political violence following the fatal shooting of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband, Mark. State Senator John Hoffman (D) and his wife, Yvette, were also injured in the shooting.

“As members of the Texas Senate, we come together - united across party lines - to unequivocally condemn political violence in all forms,” the statement reads. “The devastating events in Minnesota… strike at the very core of our shared democratic values.”

The statement comes in the wake of the deadly shooting in Minnesota carried out by suspect Vance Boelter, which authorities believe was politically motivated.

The tragedy sent shockwaves throughout the country, sparking immediate security responses across Texas. Law enforcement responded to what officials described as a “credible threat” against lawmakers, raising concerns of potential copycat incidents.

“We are grateful to the Texas Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement officers who acted swiftly to resolve any emerging danger,” the caucuses stated.

Emphasizing the sanctity of democratic debate and the rule of law, the statement warned against allowing disagreement to lead to violence. “Political disagreement is a hallmark of democracy, but resorting to violence must never be tolerated as a justifiable response,” the caucuses commented.

The joint statement rebukes extremist rhetoric, showing the Texas Senate’s commitment to protecting public servants and preserving civil discourse. “We are committed to ensuring that our institutions remain secure… and that the work of representative government continues without fear, threats, or physical harm,” the statement reads.

Calling the Minnesota shooting “a deliberate and depraved act of violence - an attack on the institutions of democracy,” the statement closed with a message of unity, stating that “we continue to pray for the Hortman and Hoffman families and for the future of our great nation.”
