Abbott Orders Flags Lowered to Half-Staff for Lives Lost to Flooding

In a gesture of mourning and solidarity, Governor Greg Abbott (R) has ordered Texas flags to be flown at half-staff in Texas to honor the lives lost during the catastrophic flooding that has ravaged parts of Texas in recent days.

The flooding, which has devastated communities in the Hill Country and surrounding regions, has resulted in significant loss of life and widespread destruction.

“In heartfelt remembrance of those whose lives were tragically lost in the recent floods, I ordered Texas flags across the state to be lowered to half-staff,” Governor Abbott said in a statement. “Cecilia and I continue to pray for their loved ones as they grieve this unimaginable loss and urge all Texans to continue praying for all impacted by this devastation.”

Flags will remain lowered until sunrise on Monday, July 14, 2025, and the directive encourages individuals, businesses, and political subdivisions to also lower their flags as a sign of respect and unity.

“Texas has sustained a devastating and heartbreaking loss,” Abbott wrote in a letter to the Texas Department of Public Safety. “Countless lives have been lost during this horrific event and an unbelievable amount of physical and emotional damage has been sustained throughout the state.”

Emergency responders continue rescue and recovery operations across the most heavily impacted areas. Hundreds have already been rescued, but many remain unaccounted for, particularly near flooded summer camps and riverside communities.

“Texas stands united in mourning and in our resolve to support those who strive to heal and recover,” Governor Abbott added in his letter. “May God bring comfort to every family affected and strength to the thousands of first responders still working on the ground.”
