FBI Responds to Cornyn’s Request to Help Locate Absent Texas Democrats

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has responded to a request from U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R) to assist in locating Texas House Democrats who left the state to block a Republican-led redistricting vote.

“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Cornyn said in a written statement. “I thank President Trump and Director Patel for supporting and swiftly acting on my call for the federal government to hold these supposed lawmakers accountable for fleeing Texas. We cannot allow these rogue legislators to avoid their constitutional responsibilities.”

Cornyn previously sent a letter to FBI Director Patel requesting assistance, citing concerns over potential criminal conduct by lawmakers who left the state on August 3, 2025.

“Their stated goal was to prevent the legislature from properly meeting, in violation of their oath of office,” Cornyn wrote.

The senator expressed concern that out-of-state supporters have pledged to shield the lawmakers from consequences. He also raised the possibility that legislators who received financial support to avoid their duties could be in violation of bribery and public corruption statutes.

Cornyn emphasized the FBI’s role in supporting state authorities when individuals cross state lines to avoid legal obligations.

While it is unclear what specific actions the FBI will take, Cornyn’s announcement marks a rare instance of federal law enforcement being asked to intervene in a state-level legislative standoff.

Texas Democrats who left the state argue they are protecting voting rights and resisting partisan gerrymandering. Republicans, including Cornyn, say the walkout undermines the rule of law and legislative responsibility.

The situation continues to develop as both legal and political pressures mount.
