Greg Abbott Calls Out James Talarico Over Immigration, Bail Votes

Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) criticized Democratic U.S. Senate Candidate James Talarico (D) in a social media post, accusing the state lawmaker of failing to support legislation related to violent crime and illegal immigration.

Gov. Abbott's comments referenced Jocelyn's Law, legislation named after 12-year-old Houston resident Jocelyn Nungaray, whose death drew widespread attention in Texas political debates surrounding immigration and public safety.

"James Talarico was absent when it mattered most," Abbott wrote on X.

The governor continued, "When Texas lawmakers voted on Jocelyn's Law - named for a 12-year-old Houston girl sexually assaulted and strangled by illegal immigrants - Talarico was a no-show."

Abbott also criticized Talarico's past vote on the Damon Allen Act, legislation that imposes restrictions on violent offenders.

"Before that, he voted against the Damon Allen Act - against bail restrictions for violent sexual offenders. And called illegal immigrants 'my constituents,'" said Abbott.

The governor concluded the statement by tying the criticism to Talarico's Senate Campaign.

"Jocelyn Nugaray's family deserved better. Texas deserves better. Talarico can run for U.S. Senate. But he can't run from his record," stated Abbott.

The exchange comes as Texas Republicans continue to focus heavily on immigration enforcement and bail reform issues ahead of the upcoming Senate race. Abbott and other republican leaders have frequently highlighted legislation targeting repeat violent offenders, stricter bail policies, and enhanced immigration enforcement as central priorities.

The Senate race is expected to intensify as both parties sharpen contrasts on immigration, criminal justice, and public safety policies.

Abbott's remarks signal that immigration enforcement is likely to remain a major political flashpoint in Texas as the Senate race continues, with Republicans continuing to scrutinize Democratic candidates' legislative records on public safety issues.
