President Trump called for the "America 250" concert to be cancelled Saturday after multiple artists withdrew from performing at the upcoming Great American State Fair on the National Mall.
The president instead wants there to be "a giant MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN RALLY, for 250," he wrote on Truth Social, "instead of having overpriced singers, who nobody wants to hear, whose music is boring, and yet who do nothing but complain."
The concert, which was set for June 25, was supposed to be part of a 16-day event celebrating America's 250th birthday. However, two days after the lineup was announced, multiple artists backed out, citing concerns over the event being "politically charged". Now, event plans might change.
The event is organized by Freedom 250, a nonpartisan organization that has close affiliation with President Trump, concerning many performers.
“The artists were never told about any political involvement with the event,” Young MC, one of the performers who backed out, wrote in a Facebook post. “And despite the claims by the organizers that the event is non-partisan, SPIN magazine describes it as ‘Trump-backed.’ I hope to perform in D.C. in the near future at an event that is not so politically charged.”
The original lineup included Young MC, Bret Michaels of Poison, Vanilla Ice, and country star Martina McBride. All four have dropped out besides Vanilla Ice, who previously performed at Trump's Mar-a-Lago mansion for a New Year's Eve party in 2020.
Flo Rida is another performer in the lineup, but has yet to comment on the situation.
After the cancellations, Trump berated the artists who cancelled and said he will deliver a "major speech" instead. The event, which was supposed to be a celebration of America's history and all 50 states, will be changing plans as the country nears its 250th birthday.
