The “Squad” members haven’t said whether they are taking applications for more members, but Texas Democrat and congressional candidate Mike Siegel sure hopes they will extend him an invite into their socialist circle if he wins his race against Republican Rep. Michael McCaul.
During a July interview on the Progressive “The Nomiki Show,” Siegel was wishful that “maybe a couple of guys” may join the girls club
Here is what Siegel said:
“Squad 2.0 coming in and Jamaal. Bowman! HAHA! Maybe a couple of guys to join the ladies there. Um but yeah. I mean, well, you know I will start ou and pay my dues, join the Progressive Caucus and support the movement. Sign on to Medicare for All. I think the Green New Deal is an area I can provide some leadership.”
Yes, Siegel, who is an ultra-progressive Democrat who honored his parents by comparing them to Che Guevara and Fidel Castro, is campaigning on wanting to be a member of AOC’s group.
“If I had to describe my parents as political figures, I would borrow from the Cuban Revolution, and I would say in our family my mom’s the Che and my dad’s the Fidel,” Siegel said in a speech given at the National Lawyers Guild. “But, I want to say that I’m here as a proud red diaper baby.”
Given that Siegel is a devout Progressive, it goes without saying that he checks off all of the ideological boxes of today’s socialist wing of the Democrat Party, but does he support the divisive rhetoric that the Squadsters have been using to promote their political agenda?
Remember, Rep. Ilhan Omar famously stated that “some people did something” when referencing the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She also called her hometown police department a “cancer.” Omar is the author of many divisive tweets, some of which have since been deleted.
To be fair to AOC, she is the one pressing send on the most egregious and offensive statements. AOC tweeted (now deleted) “You absolutely love to see it” in response to a message about U.S. oil prices dropping below zero as a result of the COVID-19 economic shutdown. Siegel is yet to denounce AOC’s oil comments, which is remarkable considering that he is running in Texas where the oil industry employs thousands of people.
The Squad’s proclivity for saying divisive things is harmful to America’s national discourse. Elected officials, and candidates running for elected office, should be focused on unifying Americans and delivering results. Siegel’s embrace of the “Squad” and their bombast is no surprise. Earlier this cycle, Siegel’s Democrat primary opponent said that Siegel had “doubled down on politics of division” and was someone who valued “rhetoric and hyperbole over evidence and results.”
