In the wake of several deadly shootings across the United States, Texas State Senator Roland Gutierrez (D) has released a new statement condemning and calling for an end to gun violence.

#America was built on free speech to enact change and to get things done. I’m proud that students embrace their constitutional right to call for action,” tweeted Sen. Gutierrez.

“As adults, we need to listen and make this world a safer place for them. We must put an end to #gunviolence. #EnoughIsEnough"

The state senator emphasized the nation’s history with demanding policy change.

“The United States of America was built on speaking out to make change and get things done. I’m proud that students embrace their God-given right to call for action,” stated Sen. Gutierrez.

There have been multiple student-led protests rallying against gun violence. However, the Texas senator disagreed with children having to take on that level of responsibility.

“Children shouldn’t have to walk out of class so that adults can find the political will to do something to keep them safe,” stated the Texas lawmaker.

Gutierrez challenged politicians who have resisted Americans’ public outcry for legislative change.

“Gun violence is the leading cause of death for children in America. Our young kids are dying in schools nationwide because politicians refuse to change gun laws.”

Though there has been bipartisan support for new gun legislation, there has been pushback from Republican lawmakers as well.

“The so-called ‘grown-ups’ need to listen to their kids right now. The officers sworn to protect them chose to cower in fear. The Republican Legislature that makes the law is doing nothing,” stated the Texan politician.

Taking aim at Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R), Gutierrez lamented the tactics he claimed were used by Republican politicians to stall new bills on gun reform.

“Their U.S. Senators promote gridlock in Washington, D.C., rather than break through it. And the Governor, sworn to protect the people of this state, spends his time covering it all up.”

Gutierrez ended his statement with another plea for “common-sense” gun laws.

“The majority of Texans support common-sense gun safety laws. It’s time for politicians to find the human decency and political courage to do something about gun violence.”

The state senator’s rhetoric on “common-sense” gun laws has not changed since his statements on the Uvalde massacre.

Gutierrez stated, “Not one parent in Uvalde is asking for anybody’s guns to be taken away. They’re asking for a small law change to not allow an 18-year-old to have access to a militarized weapon until they’re 21.”

“It’s common sense.”
