Former president Donald Trump (R) is facing his third indictment, this time for his involvement in attempting to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.

In the indictment, Trump was charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, witness tampering and conspiracy against the rights of citizens and an attempt to obstruct an official proceeding.

Representatives around the country shared their responses to the news of the former president’s indictment.

Texas Representative Joaquin Castro (D) expressed his approval of the charges filed against Trump while also highlighting the importance of the verdict.

“I’m glad to see that Donald Trump has been indicted for his role in trying to overthrow the results of the 2020 Presidential Election and for stoking the failed coup of January 6, 2021. If he gets away with it others will try the same in the years ahead. The world is watching.”

Texas Representative Veronica Escobar (D) pointed out the reason for Trump’s indictment, as well as the change in opinion in the Republican party regarding his part in the January 6 insurrection.

“Indicted for attempting to overturn the 2020 election. In the hours following the insurrection, many of my Republican colleagues condemned Trump and acknowledged the danger he posed to our nation. Today, those same Republicans will turn their back on our nation to defend him.”

Texas Representative Wesley Hunt (D) shared a much different opinion than his Democratic peers. The congressman made extreme claims that the third indictment of Trump was somehow in contrast with the Constitution.

“STATEMENT ON LATEST TRUMP INDICTMENT: Imagine serving in combat as I did, fighting for American ideals, and giving an oath that meant you might lose your life in defense of our Constitution, only to witness the complete subversion of that Constitution just a few years later by the very Administration now holding power,” said Rep. Hunt.

The Texas representative’s statements were filled with adoration and hyperbolic sentiments toward the former president.

“Imagine witnessing a nation built on the promise of freedom trying to take that freedom away from a man who sacrificed everything to rebuild the United States we once knew.”

The army veteran made allegations against the federal government, claiming that there were heightened levels of corruption.

“Imagine knowing that the next election is a choice between re-electing an American President willing to give his freedom to save our nation or watching that man be imprisoned by a regime so corrupt we’ve run out of whistleblowers to describe the corruption.”

According to the representative, Trump’s indictments are anti-democracy.

“The endless indictments of Trump are really an indictment of a free society, an indictment on the American spirit, an indictment of YOU.”

Without explaining his claims, Rep. Hunt stated that Trump was a “symbol of resistance” for America.

“Donald Trump is symbol of resistance for every man and woman who believe in a free society, a strong independent nation, secure borders, secure communities, a strong economy, and an America that resembles the nation we want our children to inherit.”

Similar to some other Republican politicians, the Texas congressman believes that the justice system has been “weaponized”.

“This political war that Biden has waged by weaponizing the most powerful levers of justice is doing irreparable harm to the United States.”

Rep. Hunt concluded his statement by saying that the former president would beat out the other Republican candidates.

“But fear not America, Trump will be our nominee.  - WPH”

Trump’s most recent indictment adds yet another layer to a strange 2024 campaign.
